About Chemka Hotspring

Chemka Hot Springs or Maji Moto, is a stunning geothermal oasis in the Masama Rundugai ward of Hai District, Kilimanjaro Region, Tanzania. Located approximately 40 km from Moshi, this natural spring emerges from underground caves, creating crystal-clear, turquoise pools surrounded by lush fig and palm trees in a semi-arid landscape. Despite its name, the water is not hot but a refreshing 27°C (81°F), fed by groundwater from Mount Kilimanjaro, making it perfect for swimming, rope swings, and tire tubing. The springs, historically sacred to the Chagga people, are 6–10 meters deep in places, home to Garra Rufa fish that nibble dead skin for a natural pedicure, as well as catfish and occasional turtles. Activities include swimming, snorkeling, birdwatching (with species like blue monkeys in the trees), and cultural tours of nearby Maasai or Chagga villages. Basic facilities include a restaurant serving Tanzanian dishes like chipsi mayai (omelette with fries) and a souvenir shop, with camping available. Kikuletwa is an ideal day trip for relaxation after a Kilimanjaro climb or safari, offering a serene escape with Kilisherpas’ expert-guided tours.

Climate

Kikuletwa Hot Springs’ climate is semi-arid, influenced by its location at approximately 1,000 meters in the Kilimanjaro Region, with hot days and cooler nights:

Dry Season (June–October): Hot days averaging 28–33°C (82–91°F) and cool nights (10–15°C, 50–59°F). Minimal rainfall ensures smooth access roads and pleasant swimming conditions, with clear skies offering potential views of Mount Kilimanjaro. The surrounding vegetation is less lush but still vibrant around the oasis.

Short Dry Season (January–February): Hot and slightly humid, with daytime temperatures of 30–35°C (86–95°F) and nights around 12–18°C (54–64°F). Occasional light showers occur, but roads remain passable, and the springs are ideal for swimming and relaxation.

Wet Season (March–May and November–December): Hot and humid, with daytime temperatures of 30–36°C (86–97°F) and nights around 12–18°C (54–64°F). The long rains (March–May) bring heavy showers, making dirt roads to the springs muddy and challenging without a 4x4 vehicle, while the short rains (November–December) feature brief afternoon showers, allowing morning visits. The wet season enhances the oasis’s greenery and birdlife.

Key Notes: Pack swimwear, sunscreen, and a hat for sun protection, as the area lacks extensive shade. Waterproof gear and sturdy shoes are recommended for wet season visits due to bumpy roads. Mosquito repellent is essential year-round. The equatorial climate ensures consistent daylight hours, with sunrise around 6:30 AM and sunset around 6:30 PM year-round.

Weather conditions can vary throughout the year at Chemka Hotspring.

Getting There

Kikuletwa Hot Springs is accessible from Moshi (40 km, 1–1.5-hour drive) or Arusha (70 km, 1.5–2-hour drive) via a paved road toward Boma Ng’ombe, followed by a 30–45-minute stretch on bumpy, unpaved roads requiring a 4x4 vehicle, especially in the wet season. The closest international gateway is Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA), 60 km from the springs (a 1–1.5-hour drive). KIA serves flights from hubs like Doha (Qatar Airways), Amsterdam (KLM), and Nairobi (Kenya Airways). From Moshi, the route passes sugar cane plantations and baobab trees, with potential Kilimanjaro views on clear days. Public transport options include a dala-dala (minibus) to Boma Ng’ombe (1,500 TZS, ~£0.5), followed by a tuk-tuk or boda-boda (motorbike taxi) for ~30,000 TZS (£10) round trip, though private tours are more comfortable. The entrance fee is approximately 20,000 TZS (£6). Kilisherpas arranges seamless 4x4 transfers from KIA, Moshi, or Arusha, including guides, entrance fees, and optional picnic lunches. For those combining with other destinations, Kikuletwa is 3–3.5 hours from Lake Manyara National Park, 4 hours from Ngorongoro Crater, and 5 hours from Serengeti National Park. Travelers from Nairobi, Kenya, can reach Moshi via a 5–6-hour drive through the Namanga border, requiring a Kenyan visa.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Kikuletwa Hot Springs depends on your preferences for weather, crowd levels, and road accessibility:

June–October (Dry Season): The peak season for visiting, with dry roads, clear skies, and comfortable swimming conditions. Early morning visits (8–9 AM) are ideal to avoid crowds and spot blue monkeys in the trees. Book early, as the springs can get busy by noon, especially on weekends.

January–February (Short Dry Season): A quieter period with warm, stable weather, suitable for swimming and cultural tours. Roads are generally accessible, and fewer visitors provide a more relaxed experience.

November–December (Short Rains): Brief afternoon showers allow for morning visits. Roads may be slightly muddy but passable with a 4x4. The springs are less crowded, and the surrounding greenery is vibrant, with lower rates for nearby accommodations.

March–May (Long Rains): Heavy rainfall makes unpaved roads challenging, often requiring a 4x4, and may reduce the enjoyment of swimming due to muddy surroundings. The springs are quieter, and the lush scenery attracts birdwatchers, with discounted rates available.
