Diverse landscapes from savannahs to volcanic craters support abundant wildlife year-round.

Where to Go: Tanzania Safari Circuits
Northern Circuit
Serengeti National ParkSerengeti National Park – Endless golden plains define this UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to one of the world’s greatest natural events: the Great Wildebeest Migration. Over 1.5 million wildebeest, accompanied by hundreds of thousands of zebra and gazelle, traverse the savannah in search of fresh grazing. Year-round excellent game viewing includes the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino), plus cheetah, giraffe, and over 500 bird species. The vast landscape and dramatic river crossings make every game drive unforgettable.
Ngorongoro Conservation AreaNgorongoro Conservation Area - The world’s largest intact volcanic caldera forms a natural amphitheatre teeming with wildlife. Home to over 25,000 large animals, the crater floor supports high densities of zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, lion, and elephant. It offers one of the best chances in East Africa to spot the endangered black rhino, often seen emerging from the Lerai Forest or grazing in open grasslands. The dramatic crater walls and cultural Maasai presence add depth to this “Garden of Eden” experience
Tarangire National ParkTarangire National Park – Towering ancient baobab trees and the life-giving Tarangire River create a golden-light landscape that shines brightest in the dry season (July–October). Famous for one of Tanzania’s largest elephant populations, with herds of hundreds gathering along the river, the park also boasts excellent buffalo, lion, and birdlife (over 550 species). It offers a quieter, more intimate safari feel compared to the busier northern parks.
Southern Circuit

Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous)Nyerere National Park - One of Africa’s largest protected areas, this vast wilderness features the mighty Rufiji River with its network of lakes, channels, and swamps. Enjoy thrilling boat safaris among hippos and crocodiles, guided walking safaris for close-up wildlife encounters, and game drives in uncrowded miombo woodlands. Excellent for elephant, lion, buffalo, and African wild dog sightings, Nyerere delivers an authentic, adventurous bush experience.
Ruaha National ParkRuaha National Park – Tanzania's second-largest national park – boasts dramatic rocky landscapes, baobab-dotted plains, and the Great Ruaha River. Renowned for its exceptional predator viewing, including one of East Africa’s largest lion populations and a strong presence of endangered African wild dogs, it also offers superb birding (over 570 species, including many raptors). Ideal for walking safaris and those seeking a wilder, less-visited safari.
Western Circuit

Gombe National ParkGombe National Park – Famous worldwide as the site of Jane Goodall’s groundbreaking chimpanzee research since the 1960s. Trek through steep forested slopes to observe habituated chimpanzees in their natural habitat. The park’s lakeside setting adds beautiful views of Lake Tanganyika, with opportunities to see other primates like olive baboons and red-tailed monkeys. This intimate, foot-based experience feels raw and deeply immersive.
KataviKatavi – One of Tanzania’s most remote and untouched parks, featuring vast floodplains and seasonal rivers. Late in the dry season, enormous herds of buffalo, elephant, and zebra congregate, while dramatic river pools fill with hundreds of hippos, often leading to impressive territorial battles. Crocodiles, lions, and excellent birdlife complete this wild, primaeval safari destination.
Best Time to Visit: Month-by-Month Guide
Seasons shape the experience. Use this quick guide to match your dates with what you want to see, then we’ll fine-tune around local conditions. Exact timing can shift with rainfall patterns. Tell us your dates and we’ll place you in the right area.
January–February: Calving SeasonThe southern Serengeti and Ndutu area transform into a nursery as over 1.5 million wildebeest gather on the nutrient-rich short-grass plains to give birth. Up to 8,000 calves can be born in a single day, creating an explosion of new life. This period brings intense predator action, with lions, cheetahs, hyenas, and jackals drawn to the vulnerable newborns. It’s an excellent time for dramatic wildlife photography and intimate sightings, with fewer visitors than the peak dry season.
March: Green & QuietThe plains turn lush and emerald green after the short rains, offering stunning photographic opportunities with dramatic skies and blooming wildflowers. Wildlife is still abundant, but visitor numbers drop significantly, allowing for a more peaceful and relaxed safari experience. This shoulder month is ideal for those who prefer fewer crowds, excellent birding, and a slower-paced journey through the Serengeti and Ngorongoro.
April–May: Long RainsThis is the main rainy season in northern Tanzania, with occasional heavy afternoon showers that can make some roads muddy. Many remote camps and mobile tents close, but well-located lodges in the central Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Tarangire remain open and beautiful. The landscapes are vibrantly green, birdlife is at its peak with migratory species, and you’ll enjoy significantly lower rates and very few other vehicles on game drives.
June–October: Dry Season & Prime Game ViewingThe classic safari season features clear blue skies, cooler temperatures, and short grass that makes spotting wildlife much easier. Animals concentrate around permanent water sources, delivering outstanding game viewing across the Northern Circuit. This is the best overall period for reliable sightings of the Big Five in Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire, and Lake Manyara.
July–October: Great Migration River CrossingsGreat Migration River Crossing
The massive herds reach the northern Serengeti and the Mara River, where dramatic river crossings unfold. Wildebeest and zebra plunge into crocodile-infested waters in a chaotic frenzy, one of nature’s most breathtaking spectacles. Exact timing varies slightly each year depending on rainfall, but the action is most intense from late July through September, with some crossings continuing into October. This is peak season, so early booking is essential.
November–December: Short Rains & Green LandscapesThe short rains refresh the parched plains, bringing dramatic cloud formations, lush new grass, and excellent birdwatching as migratory species return. The herds begin moving southward again toward the calving grounds. Visitor numbers thin out (especially before the December holidays), offering great value, beautiful scenery, and a peaceful atmosphere. It’s an ideal time for photography and those combining a safari with a Mount Kilimanjaro climb or a Zanzibar beach extension.
