Northern Circuit

Serengeti National Park

January–February: Calving Season

The southern Serengeti and Ndutu area transform into a nursery as over 1.5 million wildebeest gather on the nutrient-rich short-grass plains to give birth. Up to 8,000 calves can be born in a single day, creating an explosion of new life. This period brings intense predator action, with lions, cheetahs, hyenas, and jackals drawn to the vulnerable newborns. It’s an excellent time for dramatic wildlife photography and intimate sightings, with fewer visitors than the peak dry season.

March: Green & Quiet

The plains turn lush and emerald green after the short rains, offering stunning photographic opportunities with dramatic skies and blooming wildflowers. Wildlife is still abundant, but visitor numbers drop significantly, allowing for a more peaceful and relaxed safari experience. This shoulder month is ideal for those who prefer fewer crowds, excellent birding, and a slower-paced journey through the Serengeti and Ngorongoro.

April–May: Long Rains

This is the main rainy season in northern Tanzania, with occasional heavy afternoon showers that can make some roads muddy. Many remote camps and mobile tents close, but well-located lodges in the central Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Tarangire remain open and beautiful. The landscapes are vibrantly green, birdlife is at its peak with migratory species, and you’ll enjoy significantly lower rates and very few other vehicles on game drives.

June–October: Dry Season & Prime Game Viewing

The classic safari season features clear blue skies, cooler temperatures, and short grass that makes spotting wildlife much easier. Animals concentrate around permanent water sources, delivering outstanding game viewing across the Northern Circuit. This is the best overall period for reliable sightings of the Big Five in Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire, and Lake Manyara.

July–October: Great Migration River Crossings

Wildebeest and zebra plunge into crocodile-infested waters in a chaotic frenzy, one of nature’s most breathtaking spectacles. Exact timing varies slightly each year depending on rainfall, but the action is most intense from late July through September, with some crossings continuing into October. This is peak season, so early booking is essential.

November–December: Short Rains & Green Landscapes

The short rains refresh the parched plains, bringing dramatic cloud formations, lush new grass, and excellent birdwatching as migratory species return. The herds begin moving southward again toward the calving grounds. Visitor numbers thin out (especially before the December holidays), offering great value, beautiful scenery, and a peaceful atmosphere. It’s an ideal time for photography and those combining a safari with a Mount Kilimanjaro climb or a Zanzibar beach extension.
